Banned Books Week started in 1982 in response to a surge in challenges to books in schools, bookstores, and libraries. The intent is to celebrate the freedom to read and highlight the value of access to information, even when it's unpopular or unorthodox. Authors who write erotic or gay books are often banned from advertising, even on sites where their books are for sale.
